Welcome to my website about My EXPERIENCE WITH GREEK FOOD OUTSIDE OF GREECE.
I created this website to pay the tribute to Greece, with its great atmosphere, nice weather, friendly people and fantastic food. Actually the biggest part of my website will probably be about Greek food.
Upon my last visit in Greece, back in 2011, I was told there is growing number of Greek Restaurants in the United Kingdom. Strange but true I have never visited any of them back in my country, even though I have visited Greece over 10 times. So I decided to pay a visit to a few of them - a quick search through Yell revealed there was 4 Greek Restaurants in Newcastle upon Tyne. Not a big number, yet two of this places were out of Newcastle really, placed in Newcastle outskirt towns in North Tyneside. No Greek food in Gateshead or South Shields, not a single one in Sunderland. When comes to Newcastle upon Tyne, there is only 300,000 people in the city but as much as 1,650,000 in the whole Tyne and Wear area. There is literally thousands of restaurants, ONLY 4 Greek? Simply unbelievable.
I reached for another few websites and web directories, most notably Brownbook and Freeindex and it became clear that there is hardly any Greek cuisine in Newcastle.
So my first experience with Greek cuisine was in Greek Tavern in Bigg Market. Interesting location and traditional Greek decor, but we couldn't get in with my disabled friend due to Greek Tavern being inaccessible for wheelchair, so we had to abandon the visit.
Right as we left this restaurant, there was the other place that is being advertised as Greek Restaurant, namely Cafe Neon.
Well - Cafe it was indeed - lovely desserts, nice coffees, nice music (a bit on the loud side but it was on Friday night after all). This place has some rather interesting menu with plenty different positions to choose from, also some traditional Greek cuisine. But it is not a strictly Greek Restaurant from the menu nor from the looks. While I can't really blame the place as our visit was overall nice experience, tagging it as a Greek place might be just a little to forward. The owner is a Greek gentleman so maybe he just missed his country so badly he decided to name his place after Greece. I might get back there some other time, but for what I found in other places I doubt it will happen in the near future.
I remember one of the restaurants in the Town to advertise itself as 'The best Greek dining experience outside of Greece'. But was it really? I was there some time after zumba classes with my friends, and lets face it - the experience was slightly dissapointing.

I had this groupon voucher after I purchased a mezze deal for 2. As I was rather busy at Uni, I forgot about the voucher and there came the end of March and it actually ran out of date..I rang the place anyway, just to check whether they can offer an access for disabled person (I felt like i owe this one to retarded Mark Rea), and while they confirmed they were fully accessible for disabled customers I mentioned I had a voucher code that had already expired. How surprised I was when I was told they actually extended the validity of groupon deal for another month - it sounded so promising!
So we headed there after Zumba Fitness, with some hope and fear in our harts, but as we entered this place, we were welcomed by some weirdo, who showed us our table by the window and we ordered our drinks. The location of this restaurant is great -it sits right on Whitley Bay beach - even on cold and rainy days you would enjoy some nice views of the shore, lighthouse and the waves. Back to our dining experience - the portions of food were tiny and we had to wait ages for the mains. Threre were only 2 other tables taken during the whole visit so the place was not busy at all.
I have to complain the waiter was very rude and lookes as he was tired but it was only 6pm and they opened at 4pm so I don't understand this kind of attitude. Also the drinks we wanted to order were apparently not served that day and we were offered Greek wine instead but I saw the barman reaching for Pinot Grigio (Italian wine) insted.
As we were leaving It's All Greek 2 Me we were faced with the horrible weather and I swear it was like another cold shower after this failed evening with not the best food and horrible service.
Well if I were to give stars - no "Greek Restaurant" in Newcastle area would get a 5-star or 4-star prize. I think they should realize there is growing number of people looking for vegeterian food not only in the Broch.
I don't know whether there will be anybody who will ever visit my website, and since I lack SEO abilities, but if you are stepping by and you found my longish monolog interesting in any way or would like to comment on it than please drop me an email at [email protected]
